The best birthday gift I've ever received

A couple of years ago, I asked for something special for my birthday. Instead of the typical “happy birthday” message in a card or text message, I asked everyone I know to write and send me a handwritten love letter. 

I received many letters from family and friends, and even from people I haven’t met in-person or spoken to in over a decade! I can confidently say, these were the best birthday gifts I've ever received.

The sight of everyone’s handwriting coupled with the heartfelt words of love and admiration truly made my heart burst with joy. And now I have special keepsakes that I will cherish for a lifetime.

Some of my friends have kept up the tradition and continue to send me love letters every year for my birthday. I wrote about one of the letters I received last year for my 40th which meant so much more than I can even put into words. You can read it here: 40 Things I love About You.

For my Mom’s 65^th birthday, I wrote her a love letter and printed it on handmade paper. She cried reading it and said it was one of the most thoughtful gifts she’s ever received. You can read the letter I wrote to her on my blog post Celebrate Mom with two of the most meaningful gifts.

A letter is a deeply personal gift. Unlike a card with a general message that you just sign your name to, or a short text message or social media post, a longer letter shows the recipient that you took the time to pause, reflect, and write a message solely for them. 

Obviously you could pair the letter with another gift, but the letter itself can certainly standalone (and it’s practically free!).

I have several pen-pals and one of the best things about writing back and forth is seeing and connecting someone’s handwriting back to them. Even if you think your penmanship is poor (it’s probably not), please don’t let that stop you from writing to your loved ones.

Each stroke of the pen carries part of you with it. Your letter not only holds words, but also the memories and emotions you share with the recipient. Since my sister and my Great Aunt Audrey passed away, I am so thankful that I can still run my fingers across their handwriting on old letters and cards to feel close to them again. You have the power to give that gift to your loved ones, too.

If you’re not sure what to write in your letter, here are some things to consider.

1. Start with a warm greeting or a special nickname they have. Let it set the tone for the heartfelt message to follow.

2. Take this opportunity to reminisce about the memories you have with the person. Recall how you met, inside jokes you share, or memorable experiences that highlight the unique bond you have.

3. Express gratitude and appreciation for having the person in your life. Share all the things you love and admire about them and the positive impact they've had on your life.

4. Extend warm wishes for the recipient's birthday. I always try to remind them that they deserve to indulge in all of their favorite things, including eating cake for breakfast. :-)

5. End your letter with an expression of love and affection. Let the recipient know how much they mean to you and how fortunate you are to have them in your life.
